QPR 0 - 2 Sheffield United

A good win in the capital on Saturday; unfortunately we had a ‘do’ at Church so I wasn’t able to watch or listen on the radio live, but I looked at some of the match day video and highlights, so these are just a few opinions from that.

Sheffield United 1 - 2 Coventry City

After defeating the team at the bottom of the Championship, the Blades now faced the team at the top. And it was a very different opponent and challenge as Coventry’s clinical finishing showed why they are at the top.

Sheffield United 2 - 1 Sheffield Wednesday

Steel City Derby day in Sheffield last Sunday and the Blades completed a ‘double’ as we beat our city rivals for the second time this season. In doing so, we also confirmed that Sheffield Wednesday would be relegated to League One and, although it’s been clear for some time that that would be the case, United being the side to officially relegate them made it a bit sad.

Portsmouth 0 - 1 Sheffield United

Saturday was a lovely day weather-wise, both here and in Portsmouth (hope others had a bit of respite, too!) and the Blades did manage a smash-and-grab win, with a goal in the ninety-fifth minute.

As it’s Valentine’s Day today, there was a wonderful tongue-in-cheek article in The Times Magazine, headed “Calling all Lovermen!” I won’t reproduce it all here, but just some highlights . . . saving the best for last!

Not quite the result desired, but it wasn’t raining, so that was a bonus!

Sheffield United 3 - 1 Oxford United

I looked at the weather forecast for Sheffield which said temperature of minus 2, heavy rain turning to sleet and strong winds. I really do not like missing games, but on this occasion, I went with ‘health and safety’; and watching from my armchair in the warmth won out!

Sheffield United 3 - 1 Ipswich Town

This was what I’d call a proper “old school” football match, with tackles flying in everywhere and the referee losing control. However, three moments of clinical finishing saw the Blades have the advantage. (Proper “old school” freezing weather as well!)

Southampton 1 - 0 Sheffield United

Thankfully SKY were showing this match, as I didn’t fancy travelling to Southampton on a cold, wet (very wet!) Wednesday evening! And, it was a rather dull game in the end.

Charlton Athletic 1 - 0 Sheffield United

In a bizarre game at Charlton, the victory owed a lot to the fact that the Blades were reduced to 9 men before half-time, with referee Oliver Langford certainly making his mark on proceedings.

Sheffield United 3 - 4 Mansfield Town

With the atrocious weather, I didn’t go to Sheffield to watch this match, so I’ll just post the official report from the website for my own records.

I set off from Lincoln at 9.30 am to make it to Sheffield for a 12.00 noon kick-off. And many other supporters had set off from such exotic and far flung places as Gloucestershire and Liverpool . . .

As I was driving into Sheffield I wondered where all the traffic was and why none of the usual "road closed" signs had been put up - then got to the ground, to be told that the game had been called off - at 10.00 am!

Officials at Sheffield United are extremely disappointed the fixture could not go ahead.

In the build up to the game, our pre-match procedures for forecasted low temperatures were followed, which included the use of our undersoil heating system.

This morning a small section of the playing surface was raised as a cause for concern. With this area still part frozen, all attempts were made to address this section of the pitch for it to meet the standard required for the match to go ahead.

The referee was then called in at the earliest possible opportunity to assess the playing surface. After he arranged an inspection, he deemed there to be a player safety concern, and opted to call off the fixture at 10am.

I hardly think 10.00 am is "the earliest possible opportunity", but hey ho!

I spoke to some Oxford United supporters who were wandering around - they'd come down the night before and stayed at the hotel so were quite annoyed to be out-of-pocket!

Ah well, at least it was a nice, bright day (if very cold!) for travelling . . .

Sheffield United 3 - 1 Leicester City

It was a bitterly cold afternoon in Sheffield, but maybe that helped the players run around to keep warm! Whatever it was, it was a great match and a great score.

SKY had decided not to show this match live. Although they'd said they would broadcast all EFL Matches over the Christmas / New Year period, they decided they couldn't show this one as it was a "re-arranged Saturday fixture". And yet it was always scheduled for the Monday evening, right from when the fixtures were released . . . ???

So I went to the website to activate my audio subscription (commentary provided by BBC Radio Sheffield) only to find that on both SUTV and Radio Sheffield, there were "technical problems" which meant the match couldn't be broadcast . . . ???

So, since I didn't get to see or hear this match, here's the official report from the SUFC Website:

Wrexham 5 - 3 Sheffield United

Boxing Day and beaten by FC Hollywood (or Wrexham if you like). Truly a game of two halves – first half the Blades were on fire; then I think they were at the sherry at half time as the second half was a damp squib. So, leading 3-1, lost 5-3.
